Route Profile

Why Choose the Northern Circuit?

The Northern Circuit is the ultimate choice for trekkers who have the time to spare and want the absolute best chance of standing on Uhuru Peak. By spending several days traversing the remote northern face of the mountain, you experience profound solitude and witness views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks that no other route offers.

Because it is the longest route, it provides the most generous "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization profile, resulting in a near-perfect summit success rate.

Northern Circuit Route Profile

Is the Northern Circuit Right for You?

Choose Northern Circuit If:

  • • You have 7 to 9 days available for the climb.
  • • Your #1 priority is the highest possible summit success rate.
  • • You despise crowds and want a remote, untouched wilderness feel.
  • • You want to experience the unique 360-degree views of the northern slopes.

Consider Lemosho/Machame If:

  • • You have a strict time limit of 6 or 7 days maximum.
  • • You prefer a more varied landscape in the first few days (dense rainforest).
  • • You want a slightly lower budget (Northern Circuit is premium priced).
  • • You don't mind sharing the trail with more trekkers.

7-Day vs. 8-Day Northern Circuit: The Acclimatization Factor

Because the Northern Circuit is so long, the daily hiking distances are generally shorter and more relaxed. However, choosing between 7 and 8 days still impacts your acclimatization. Here is how to choose:

Condensed

7-Day Northern Circuit

$2,100

Combines the initial Shira Plateau days and skips the dedicated acclimatization hike on the northern slopes. It is faster but slightly more demanding.

  • Best for: Fit climbers who want the Northern Circuit experience but have a tighter schedule.
  • Pacing: Steady, with a few longer hiking days.
  • Success Rate: ~85-90%

*A great option if you are short on time.

HIGHEST SUCCESS

8-Day Northern Circuit

$2,300

Includes a dedicated, gentle acclimatization day at Buffalo Camp. This extra 24 hours at altitude is the secret to the route's near-perfect success rate.

  • Best for: Almost all climbers wanting maximum safety, comfort, and success.
  • Pacing: Very relaxed, short daily hikes, plenty of rest.
  • Success Rate: ~95%+

*The ultimate choice for a safe, successful summit.

The Journey

Full Day-by-Day Itinerary

Below is the complete 8-day itinerary.
Note for 7-Day Climbers: The 7-day itinerary simply skips Day 6 (Acclimatization) and hikes directly from School Hut to the Summit on Day 7.

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkumbu Camp

5-7 Hours 2,100m to 2,600m

We drive from Moshi to the Londorossi Gate. The trek begins in the lush, quiet rainforest on the western side of the mountain. The trail is gentle, allowing you to settle into the rhythm of the mountain. We arrive at Mti Mkumbu Camp in the late afternoon. Enjoy a hot dinner and your first night under the canopy.

Day 2: Mti Mkumbu to Shira 1 Camp

5-7 Hours 2,600m to 3,500m

We leave the rainforest behind and ascend onto the vast, rolling Shira Plateau. The landscape transforms into open moorland dotted with giant heather. The air grows cooler, and you are rewarded with massive panoramic views of the mountain. We set up camp at Shira 1.

Day 3: Shira 1 to Moar Valley

4-5 Hours 3,500m to 3,700m

A relatively gentle day of trekking across the Shira Plateau towards the Moar Valley. The landscape becomes more lunar and dramatic. We arrive at Moar Valley camp early in the afternoon, giving you plenty of time to rest and hydrate for the challenging days ahead.

Day 4: Moar Valley to Lava Tower, then North Summit Camp

7-8 Hours 3,700m to 4,600m, down to 4,300m

This is a crucial acclimatization day. We climb steeply to the iconic Lava Tower (4,600m). The air is very thin, and the scenery is starkly beautiful. After lunch, instead of descending to Barranco like other routes, we traverse west and north to the remote North Summit Camp. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is the secret to the Northern Circuit's success.

Day 5: North Summit Camp to School Hut / Buffalo Camp

4-5 Hours 4,300m to 4,780m

Today we begin the traverse of the remote northern slopes. The trail is quiet, rugged, and offers breathtaking 360-degree views of both the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. You will likely see no other trekkers today. We arrive at School Hut (or Buffalo Camp) in the early afternoon.

Day 6: Acclimatization Day at School Hut

Included in 8 Day Up to 4,900m, sleep 4,780m

The secret to surviving the Northern Circuit! Instead of pushing straight to the summit, we take a short, steep hike up the slopes towards the summit (up to 4,900m) for lunch, and then descend back to sleep at School Hut. This extra 24 hours at extreme altitude forces your body to produce maximum red blood cells. (7-day climbers skip this and hike directly to the summit).

Day 7: Summit Uhuru Peak & Descend to Mweka Camp

12-15 Hours 4,780m to 5,895m, down to 3,100m

At midnight, we wake up for hot tea and begin the grueling ascent. Because we approach from the north, the trail to Gilman's Point (5,685m) is steep but less crowded. From the crater rim, it is a 1-hour glacier walk to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate the highest point in Africa! After photos, we descend rapidly to Barafu for lunch, and then continue all the way down to Mweka Camp for a deep sleep.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate & Departure

3-4 Hours 3,100m to 1,640m

After a final breakfast in the mountain forest, we complete the descent to Mweka Gate. Here, you will be awarded your summit certificate. We say our final goodbyes to your incredible guide and porter crew. Your NOJO driver will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower and a well-deserved celebration.
