Route Profile

Who is the Marangu Route For?

Known as the "Coca-Cola Route," Marangu is famous for its sleeping huts. Instead of camping in tents, you sleep in shared wooden cabins with bunk beds, basic lighting, and access to communal dining halls and flush toilets.

The trail is relatively gradual and direct, making it physically less demanding day-to-day than routes like Machame or Umbwe. However, because it ascends directly and descends via the exact same path, it offers less time for acclimatization.

Marangu Route Profile

Is Marangu the Right Choice for You?

Choose Marangu If:

  • • You strongly dislike sleeping in tents and want a real bed/roof.
  • • You are on a stricter budget (it is generally cheaper than camping routes).
  • • You have very limited time and need a 5-day option.
  • • You prefer a more gradual, less steep daily ascent profile.

Consider Lemosho/Machame If:

  • • Your #1 priority is the highest possible summit success rate.
  • • You want a more diverse, scenic landscape (Marangu is less varied).
  • • You prefer a route that goes up one side and down the other.
  • • You don't mind camping in high-quality mountain tents.

5-Day vs. 6-Day vs. 7-Day: The Acclimatization Factor

Because Marangu is a direct route, adding extra days is critical for your body to adjust to the altitude. Here is how to choose:

Lowest Success

5-Day Marangu

$1,550

The most condensed version. Skips the acclimatization day at Horombo Hut and goes straight to Kibo Hut.

  • Best for: Extremely fit, young climbers with zero extra time.
  • Pacing: Very demanding on the body.
  • Success Rate: ~60-70%

*We only recommend this for highly experienced trekkers.

BEST BALANCE

  • Best for: Most climbers wanting a safe, balanced pace.
  • Pacing: Comfortable and steady.
  • Success Rate: ~85-90%

*Highly recommended by our mountain experts.

Maximum Safety

7-Day Marangu

  • Best for: Those prioritizing safety and a very relaxed pace.
  • Pacing: Very relaxed, plenty of rest.
  • Success Rate: ~95%

*The ultimate comfort and safety option.

The Journey

Full Day-by-Day Itinerary

Below is the complete 7-day itinerary.
Note for 5-Day & 6-Day Climbers: The 6-day itinerary simply adds Day 3 (Acclimatization). The 5-day itinerary skips Day 3 and goes directly from Horombo to Kibo on Day 4.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandala Hut

4-5 Hours 1,860m to 2,715m

We drive from Moshi to the Marangu Gate (1,860m). After registration, we enter the lush, dense montane rainforest. The trail is wide and gradual. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and exotic birds. We arrive at Mandala Hut (2,715m) in the afternoon. Enjoy a hot dinner and sleep in your shared cabin.

Day 2: Mandala Hut to Horombo Hut

5-6 Hours 2,715m to 3,720m

We leave the rainforest behind as the trail opens up into the moorland zone. The landscape is dotted with giant heather and red-hot poker flowers. The air gets noticeably cooler. We arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m), a large hut complex situated on a plateau with stunning views of the Kibo peak. Rest and hydrate.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Included in 6 & 7 Day Up to 4,000m, sleep 3,720m

Crucial for success! Instead of ascending, we hike up to Zebra Rocks (4,000m) or Mandara Hut for lunch, and then descend back to Horombo Hut to sleep. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy forces your body to produce more red blood cells. (5-Day climbers skip this day and hike directly to Kibo Hut).

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

5-6 Hours 3,720m to 4,703m

The landscape transforms into the stark, beautiful alpine desert. The trail becomes rocky and steep. We pass the Barranco valley junction and hike slowly to Kibo Hut (4,703m), situated right at the base of the massive Kibo crater wall. After lunch, your guides will check your gear for the summit. You must try to sleep by 7:00 PM.

Day 5: Summit Uhuru Peak & Descend to Horombo

12-14 Hours 4,703m to 5,895m, down to 3,720m

Midnight wake-up call with hot tea. We begin the steep, grueling ascent up loose scree to Gilman's Point (5,685m), and then along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate at the roof of Africa! After photos, we descend rapidly back to Kibo Hut for a hot lunch, and then continue all the way down to Horombo Hut for a massive feast and deep sleep.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

5-6 Hours 3,720m to 1,860m

After a celebratory breakfast, we begin the final descent through the lush rainforest back to Marangu Gate. The air gets warmer and thicker. At the gate, we collect our summit certificates and say our emotional goodbyes to the guide and porter crew. Your NOJO driver will transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower.

Day 7: Contingency / Buffer Day

Included in 7 Day Only

This is a spare day built into the 7-day itinerary. If weather delays the summit, or if you need an extra day to recover and descend slowly, this day is used. If the climb goes perfectly as planned, you simply enjoy a relaxed extra day at your hotel in Moshi or explore the local area before departure.
